Clean Up the World Weekend, celebrated globally on the 3rd weekend in September was the Clean Up the World flagship event. This year the Clean Up the World Weekend was held on 19-21 September 2008 and World Scouting calls for Scouts around the globe to mobilise for this important campaign.
Clean Up the World was a community based environmental campaign that inspires and empowers individuals and communities from every corner of the globe to make their environment a cleaner, healthier place to live.
Clean Up the World and World Scouting encourages Scouts to organise an activity on, or around, Clean Up the World Weekend and to think of ways to engage the community in long-term environmental initiatives.
Since the beginning of the Clean Up the World campaign 15 years ago, Scouts have been actively getting out in their local communities and cleaning up their environment. This has included collecting many bags of litter, conducting educational campaigns, tree planting and other environmental projects.
The 2008 Clean Up the World theme “Start Today.. Save Tomorrow - Clean Up our Climate” reflects the need for local communities to Clean Up Our Climate by getting involved in activities such as protecting water sources, energy conservation, education programs, planting trees, walk to work days and waste reduction projects.
Although climate change can seem like a complex issue, there was a wide variety of simple actions that every individual and community can take to make a difference.
In 2008, Clean Up the World is encouraging and supporting participants to take action at a local level to help address this very global issue.
There are other Clean Up the World Regional Initiatives that Scouts can participate in throughout the year, including Clean Up the Baltic, Clean Up the Mediterranean and Clean Up the South-East Asian Seas.
