LONDON: Southwick Scouts are celebrating this week after the completion of a new toilet block in their scout hut. Since 1978 the scouts, guides, brownies and cubs that use the hut have been using the same old dreary toilet.
For 29 years it has served its purpose but it finally had to be updated for people with disabilities and mobility problems to allow them to use the facilities too.
Edward Pomeroy, the Southwick Scout Group leader since 1971, said: “We have carried out many improvements over the years but this time we had to totally refurbish the toilet. We could not have done it without the grants we got to help pay for it. It cost us £20,000.
“It’s all in place now and it’s a very good installation. Gilian Barker from Community First, which helps support community groups in Wiltshire, went along for the opening ceremony.
Mr Pomeroy added: “We’ve got about 200 people a week who use the scout headquarters. All different people from the community make use of it so they will really appreciate the investment. It’s added something extra to the place that was long needed.”
